Impact Socket Sets

High strength fasteners often require the use of impact wrenches or impact drivers to deliver the amount of tightening torque required to tighten or release them. Conventional sockets are manufactured from strong but brittle material, like chrome vanadium steel. Such sockets can shatter explosively if they break when operated under the severe stress of the turning force of an impact wrench.

Impact sockets are manufactured from a weaker, though more malleable steel which fail by deformation instead of shattering, such as chrome molybdenum steel. These sockets are not required to be chrome-plated, because chrome will usually chip when used with impact wrenches. To increase durability, such special sockets are made with a coating of black oxide or a coating of plastic to prevent corrosion

Impact sockets are typically used with hand-held driving tools. However, it is possible to attach them to air tools, like the impact wrenches. Users can utilize compressed air to tighten and release fasteners. This makes room for adjustments with greater torque and eases the amount of effort exerted by the user.
